Jonathon's really, really, really bad day

Jonathon Zarb (shown) and Nicole Taylor got themselves bloodied up today in an OSAID presentation geared to demonstrate the severity of driving while impaired.

OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) members Zarb and Taylor were fortunately not wounded, but their injurous attire encouraged spectators on the scene to pay attention to their message.

"Drunk driving is the number 1 killer of youth in Canada," says Zarb, "and it is completely preventable" he said.

Sault Ste. Marie City Police, Sault Ste. Marie fire officers and a team of EMS personnel were also on the scene to assist the students.

"We needed to create something absolutely realistic so the public can really understand this issue." said Sergeant Jim Egan of City Police. "This is serious, and people need to know about it - they need to see it," he said.

Egan assisted fellow officers Fran May, Lisa Kenopic and Hilda Hohmeyer in creating a realistic depiction of a serious accident caused by an impaired driver.

The totalled automobile used in the demonstration wasn't just a well-designed stage prop.

It was the wreckage from a very-real accident in 2002 from which, according to Egan, "the victims are still recovering."
