France's nuclear watchdog agency has upgraded the severity of Japan's situation to level six (up from five yesterday) out of seven on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

The head of the French nuclear authority described Japan's circumstances as less severe than the Chernobyl explosion but worse than the Three Mile Island, PA partial core meltdown in 1979.

Meanwhile, weather reports indicate that winds are dispersing radiation over the Pacific Ocean.

But there's likely no threat to Canadians, according to Ottawa.

"The situation in Japan is not expected to pose any health or safety risk to Canada," a federal government statement notes.
