Fire officials are investigating what they consider to be a suspicious house fire last night at 72 James Street.

Firefighters found flames showing at the rear of the building when they arrived around 10:20 p.m.

The house was occupied but the residents were not home at the time.

Damage was largely contained to the exterior east and north walls near the back stairwell.

Some smoke damage occurred inside and the house was ventilated.

Fire officials also report an unrelated earlier house fire in the 500 block of Wallace Terrace around 2 p.m. yesterday.

Damage, mostly due to smoke, was confined to the bungalow's kitchen area.

The fire was believed caused by an unattended pan of oil on a stove.

Photos of the James Steet fire were supplied by faithful reader Don Wilson.
