Ninety-three-year-old Jack Watkins from Sudbury, the world's oldest active curler, threw the opening rock this afternoon at the opening ceremony for the M & M Meat Shops 2008 Canadian Junior Curling Championship at the Soo Curlers rink.

Ninety-three-year-old Jack Watkins from Sudbury, the world's oldest active curler, threw the opening rock this afternoon at the opening ceremony for the M & M Meat Shops 2008 Canadian Junior Curling Championship at the Soo Curlers rink.

At the other end of the ice was 45-year-old Mr. Bon Soo, sweeping the ceremonial stone with assistance from Sault cousins Lindsay and Johnny Miners, both previous members of provincial junior championship teams.

The national event continues this week at Soo Curlers on Anita Boulevard and the Tarentorous Sports Club on Avery Road.

The men’s and women’s championship games take place next Sunday at Soo Curlers.

Those games will be broadcast live on CBC television starting at 12 noon.

British Columbia, Northern Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan all posted wins in the first draw today.
