Today is International Women's Day, as officially proclaimed by Acting Mayor Debbie Amaroso at last night's City Council meeting.

There's a Wellness for Women Celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Armouries on Pine Street today. "Women can come and get massages, manicures and their palms read and it's all free," said Giselle Beaupre, an educational awareness worker at Women in Crisis (Algoma) Inc.

Many other activities, as well as a light lunch for women and children and child care services, will also be provided free of charge.

International Women's Day was established in 1977.

"This special day marks an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women's equality; to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society and to consider future steps to enhance the status of women and of course to celebrate the we’ve made in women's areas," said Beaupre.

Tonight at the Best Western on Great Northern Road, Unity and Diversity Sault Ste. Marie is presenting Perspectives on Women's Knowledge.

It's a panel discussion and social and everyone's welcome.

Sponsors include the Best Western Great Northern, Business and Professional Women, Phoenix Rising, Unity and Diversity, and Women for Women.
