Harmeet Sooden, a professional activist who spent 118 days in Iraqi captivity with James Loney, has been deported back to New Zealand by Israeli officials, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Israeli officials reportedly considered the activist a threat to the country's national security.

Sooden (shown with James Loney), a Canadian citizen residing with his family in New Zealand, had travelled to Israel to volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

The ISM describes itself a non-violent movement that opposes the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Sooden questioned Israel's right to deny him entry.
