A post-mortem will be conducted today to determine the exact cause of death of 35-year-old Danny Venn of 800 Third Line East in Sault Ste. Marie.

Venn was found unconscious under his snowmobile on Wednesday night, after it plunged 25 feet over an embankment near the Ontario Federation Snowmobile Club groomed trail, about 500 metres from Old Goulais Bay Road.

He was an experienced sledder and was the lead rider that night, part of a group of 11 snowmobilers who participated in a weekly ride.

Alcohol was never a part of the group's runs and City Police believe it was not a factor in Wednesday night's fatal crash.

The sledders were on their way to Heyden on Wednesday night.

A head count was conducted and Venn's absence was noted in Heyden.

He was found by a trail groomer who saw fresh snowmobile tracks leaving the groomed trail, going over the embankment.

Venn was taken to Sault Are Hospital, where he succumbed to major injuries.
