Icebreaker to open Pipe Island passage

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – In accordance with 33 CFR 162.117, Captain of the Port Sault Ste. Marie will open Pipe Island Passage.

Due to deteriorating ice conditions the waterway will open effective 3 p.m. on March 19.

Coast Guard Cutter’s will conduct icebreaking operations to open the Pipe Island Passage, north and east of Pipe Island.

The Coast Guard would like to remind all recreational ice users to plan their activity carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels, which are being groomed for the opening of the shipping season.
