Hub trail users could soon be on the mark

The Sault Trails Action Committee (STAC) has been busy in enhancing the experience for cyclists in Sault Ste. Marie.

Paul Caldbick addressed the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee at a monthly meeting held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday afternoon, outlining plans to improve the Sault’s hub trail as well as moving forward with the planning process of a bicycle park.

STAC’s latest development is a marker to be placed at every half-kilometre on the hub trail for riders to track their travels, and also provide information about the trail and nearby landmarks.

“The marker is designed to give the distances to your next point, points of interest of the way, it gives you distances of how far you’ve travelled and how far to travel,” Caldbick explained. “It also provides you with a detailed map in terms of the hub trail.”

Caldbick also explained the possibility of adding codes to each marker, so that riders can use their smartphones to scan the codes to have information available on their mobile devices.

A model-marker was present at the meeting, and Caldbick said each marker is resistant to vandalism and is easily replaceable.

Deane Greenwood said whereabouts of these markers have already been located on the trail, and they could potentially be installed by as early as June 2013.

The budget to complete the project was $8,000.

In terms of the bicycle park plan, Greenwood said there was a tremendous turn out for the public open house. The next step in the process, he said, is to make a report to city council sometime in May.

“Everything is swinging in our favour at the moment,” Greenwood said.

The committee also carried discussion in regards to the public dog park proposal, which has been speculated to be located at north side of the Sault Minor Baseball Fields (Sinclair Yards). Noise and access to the area have been raised as concerns for the location, but further discussion about location and assessments will be made.
