Got a business idea?

Record your pitch to win a contest

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON  (April 16, 2013) – Calling all high school students: If you have a business idea, consider making a short video pitch.

It could earn you tools to help get your idea off the ground, along with a trip to Toronto.

Under the “Make Your Pitch” contest, an initiative from the provincial government, applicants have two minutes to describe their business ideas, including their general plan, targeted customers, problems that will likely be encountered and solved, and why the business will succeed.

Open to Ontario high school students, applicants are asked to record their pitch on video and submit it in one of the following categories:

• Retail

• Services

• Arts/Culture/Tourism

• Social Enterprise

• Technology

• Environment

To submit, or for additional information, visit here.

The contest ends May 3, 2013.

The top 18 finalists will receive tools and coaching to help bring their business ideas to life.

As well, finalists will earn a trip to Toronto, where they’ll take part in the Ontario Centres of Excellence Discovery Conference this May.

“This contest is a great opportunity for high school students to delve into the world of entrepreneurship,” said Kendall Scott, youth development coordinator for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC). “Teaching students the ins and outs of entrepreneurship will help prepare them for a lifetime of success in business.”

Youth entrepreneurship development is one of many services provided by the SSMEDC.

While promoting and helping to facilitate the “Make Your Pitch” contest, the corporation is also delivering the province’s Summer Company program, which provides grants for young entrepreneurs to start their own seasonal business.
