Bombardier Brandon Corbett returned last night from a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan, straight into the arms of his delighted fiance, Alison Nisbett.

The two (shown at Sault Ste. Marie Airport) are getting married in just 22 days and are planning a small wedding, says Brandon's mom, May Adshead.

Then, they'll be off to Sudbury, where Nisbett will attend Cambrian College.

As for last night, Nisbett says they'd pretty much be doing anything Corbett wanted to do.

"It's almost unreal that he is finally back," Nisbett said last night. "It has been so long, I almost can't believe he's really here."

All Corbett had to say was that he was very glad to be home, that he was very tired and it was really, really hot in Afghanistan.

Nisbett and Adshead have been spending a lot of time together over the past six months missing Brandon and helping other families in similar situations.

Adshead says she plans to continue the support group she and Nisbett formed, called the Sault Ste. Marie Military Family Support Group, even now that her son has returned.

"I just want to make sure that everything is in place and prepared for the others when the time comes," Adshead said.

She said it took a while to find the support she and Nisbett needed.

"Even things as simple as the terminology were beyond us and we didn't know where to find out what things mean," she said. "And there's only so much the military can tell us so it was important that we find others like us and know we are not alone in this."

Adshead said she plans to continue to work with Sault families who have military members serving overseas and to assist in whatever way she can with other chapters starting up in the region.

The Sault Ste. Marie Military Family Support Group is an affiliate of the North Bay Military Family Resource Centre.
