Every morning at 7 a.m. Rheal Plouffe crosses his backyard to the Haviland Bay beach.

For more years than Rheal can remember, he's been working to keep the area beautiful.

He combs the beach for broken glass and garbage, and tends to the facilities used by the beachgoers.

Yesterday afternoon, Rheal was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year at Goulais River's 30th Annual Community Days event.

Rheal received a plaque from Tony Martin for his all volunteer work as a member of the Sault North Kiwanis Club.

Rheal said he is flattered, but he won't be slowing down anytime soon.

"I'll keep doing it as long as I'm able to. Or until they find a replacement," Plouffe said.

Also awarded at yesterday's festivities was the Goulais River volunteer firefighter of the year.

Blair Breckenridge, one of the original founding members of the community's volunteer firefighters, received the Brydges Hopkin Award for the Goulais River Volunteer of the Year.

Since he started 25 years ago, Blair has held every position, including chief.

Breckenridge has devoted thousands of hours a year to firefighting and goes on 100 calls a year.

"It's a total surprise to me," Breckenridge said about receiving the reward. "I didn't know it was coming."

Tony Martin congratulated the people of Goulais River for all the work they put into the weekend event and then was seen with plate full of goodies including chocolate cupcakes with gummy worms on top. "It's things like these that define a community," our MP said.
