*************************** McGuinty refuses to protect consumers from rising gas prices: Horwath
QUEEN'S PARK - With gas prices rising again across Ontario, Dalton McGuinty must explain why he’s refusing to even consider looking at options to protect consumers, says NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
“Dalton McGuinty made gas more expensive through his unfair harmonized sales tax,” said Horwath. “Now the premier’s refusing to even consider looking at options to protect consumers at the pump.”
In 2005, an all-party committee voted in favour of studying options to protect consumers from wild swings in gasoline prices.
While Liberal MPPs, including the current Minister of Energy, supported the resolution, the McGuinty government ensured the work never got off the ground.
Horwath noted that gasoline prices in Northern Ontario are particularly devastating.
Prices at the pump in Timmins ($1.289 per litre), Sudbury ($1.269) and Sioux Lookout ($1.319) are significantly higher than those in provinces that regulate gas prices.
“The premier isn’t just ignoring the problem. He’s making it worse by slapping the HST on gasoline prices and daily essentials like home heating. The premier ignored families and their real concerns about making ends meet, said Horwath in Question Period yesterday.
Horwath asked the premier: “Why is the premier willing to regulate the price of beer but unwilling to do anything at all about the price of gasoline?”
