Here's why you should never undervalue your boat

*************************** SAULT STE. MARIE - (September 10) - Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers from the Sault Ste. Marie port of entry have seized a pleasure craft from a Canadian traveller at the Bondar Marina.

On September 3, two Canadians were sent for verification on a pleasure craft importation while attempting to enter Canada. 

During the examination, Border Services officers determined that the travellers had failed to declare the actual value of the pleasure craft, under-valuing it by $33,195. 

The actual value of the vessel is $90,000 (US). 

John Lawrence Duffy, 59 years of age and his wife June Muir-Duffy, 54 years of age, both of Ancaster, Ontario, are charged with making a false statement and evading duties and taxes under the Customs Act.

They were released on $100 bonds and will appear in a Sault court on September 28 on the charges.

By not declaring the pleasure craft, they attempted to evade $4,315 in duties and taxes.

To get their vessel back, a civil penalty of $18,257.00 had to be paid.
