Staples Canada and the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore are once again coming together to help children in need of school supplies for the upcoming school year.

The office supply chain's Great Northern Road location will be accepting donations of cash and school supplies until Sept. 4.

Serge Viau, chair of the service committee for Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore, says that the club has been partnering with Staples to bring local children school supplies for roughly 15 years.

“We have dates that we schedule inside the store where we wear our Kiwanis clothing, and we basically assist the cashiers in putting customer's purchases in bags,” Viau said. “At the same time, we assist the cashiers in asking their customers if they want to make a donation to the back to school program.”

Three fundraising barbecues organized by the Lakeshore Kiwanis will be held in the parking lot of the Staples on Great Northern Road over the next two weeks.

The first fundraising barbecue is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We’re doing this as a service project,” Viau said. “The barbecues, whatever net profit we make after we buy the material goes right to Staples, so it’s directly for that.”

“It’s just one more project that we do for children in our community.”

The Staples School Supply Drive has raised more than $14 million in cash, gift cards and supplies across Canada since 2005.
