Heidi's big boat ride (42 photos)

Heidi Freydank isn't what you'd call a seasoned hand in the world of tug boats.

But when she grows up, she'll be able to say that she's been on them since she could walk.

At least, if her mom and dad have their way.

This is the second trip up for Heidi and her mom Beth and this year they brought Heidi's dad, Joern, to check out the Great Tug Boat Race of 2009.

Heidi and Beth were a bow's length from being on a winning boat two years in a row, too.

SooToday.com found them on the Reliance, captained by Jack Purvis.

"The boat we were on last year won its race," said Beth.

But this year, the family wasn't quite so lucky.

It looked like the Reliance was going to take the race from the William M. Morris, but just before the finish line the Reliance seemed to lose power and the Morris pulled ahead.

From the smiling faces on board the Reliance, it seemed that no one really minded what place they finished in, as long as they were on a tug for the 28th annual race.

And it was fun for children with special needs in the twin Saults as well.

The captains and crew of more than 30 participating tugs donated their time and tugs and all proceeds to charities supporting area children with special needs.

Beth and Joern said they would do their best to make the trip up from Milwaukee, Wisconsin next year and hope for a spot on a tug with Heidi again.

They also hope to stay longer and take in a few more tourist attractions next year.
