The East Algoma OPP would like to know if you have a security camera.

The Ontario Provincial Police detachment has implemented the CAMSafe program, a database of residential and commercial security cameras in a community that investigators can access when needed.

Here’s how it works: People who are willing to participate provide basic information, including camera location and their phone number. That information is then uploaded to a digital map, which officers can access when they are investigating a crime in the neighbourhood.

“Officers cannot access your security cameras or cloud-based accounts,” says a new release from the OPP. “If police would like to examine camera footage, they can make a request to the property owner using contact information from the database.”

Simply put, the goal is to help reduce the amount of time it takes officers to locate potentially helpful footage.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service introduced a similar program earlier this year.

More information about the OPP's CAMSafe program, and how to register security cameras, can be found HERE or on YouTube.
