************************** Can you name 50 great Laurentian University alumni?

University now accepting nominations for its 50 Years of Alumni Achievement Awards

SUDBURY - (August 19) - In less than one year, precisely on March 28, 2010, Laurentian University will turn 50.

In recognition of this great half-century accomplishment, the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA) will be recognizing 50 graduates who are the epitome of Laurentian University's core values - excellence, collaboration, community, diversity, equity and accessibility, and quality of life - and who exemplify these values through their scholarly, creative, professional or humanitarian contributions.

The 50 selected alumni will be celebrated at a gala to be held at Laurentian on October 23, 2010.

If you know an exceptional individual in your family, community, city, country, workplace, networks, circle of friends or beyond (it can even be you!), who is among the 40,000 graduates of Laurentian University since 1960, you are warmly encouraged to submit their nomination before December 31, 2009.

You can find all information on the 50 Years of Alumni Achievement Awards and Laurentian's upcoming anniversary celebrations at www.celebrate50.laurentian.ca.

For more information, you can also contact Lisa Demers, director of alumni relations, at (705) 675-1151, ext. 3955 or [email protected].

Please note that these awards are not intended to identify Laurentian University's top 50 alumni, but rather display the diversity of the university and showcase the outstanding ambassadors who exemplify its core values and who are reflective of the history of the institution.

About Laurentian University

The Act to incorporate Laurentian University of Sudbury received Royal assent on March 28, 1960, creating a bilingual institution of higher learning in Sudbury.

It opened its doors in September 1960, and welcomed about 300 full-time and 400 part-time students in temporary accommodations in the downtown area.

Today, Laurentian, situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Ramsey, is the only bilingual and tricultural university in Canada.

It has been ranked fourth, since 2000, in terms of growth among Ontario universities.

Laurentian serves close to 9,000 students, including some 800 graduate and international students.

It is the first choice for university students in northeastern Ontario, all programs combined.

It offers 141 programs, in English and French, including six PhD programs.

The first cohort from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine graduated in June 2009.

In the past 49 years, Laurentian University has graduated over 40,000 students.
