On Wednesday, December 18, 2002, Harry Wolfe was honoured with the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, presented by Sault Ste. Marie MP Carmen Provenzano.

Wolfe was recognized for longstanding community involvement and excellence as a radio sportscaster and particularly as the voice of the Sault Ste. Mane Greyhounds for many years.

He was also recognized for exemplifying the highest ideals of radio broadcasting in Sault Ste. Marie.

The following explanation of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal presentation was submitted to SooToday.com by Carmen Provenzano's office:

****************************************************************** Sault Ste. Marie MP Carmen Provenzano presented the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal to 28 Sault and area residents at his constituency office today.

The Royal Canadian Mint produced the medals, which were designed by Canadian artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt in partnership with the Chancellery of Honours.

The Medal carries a contemporary effigy of The Queen on the obverse.

The reverse features the design of a stylized maple leaf with Canada at the bottom and the years 1952 and 2002 on the left and right of the Royal Cypher and Crown.

This commemorative medal has been created to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's reign as Queen of Canada.

The Medals are to be presented to approximately 46,000 Canadians in recognition of a significant achievement or distinguished service to their fellow citizens, their community or Canada.

To ensure that the awarding of the Medals was inclusive and wide-ranging, the Federal Government identified a series of partners to select recipients from their community or their organization.

Partners include some 200 national and provincial organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross, The Canadian Forces, Members of Parliament, Senators, Territorial Commissioners and the Canadian Cancer Society, to name just a few.

The recipients and their respective organizations along with friends and family attended the ceremony.

"The Golden Jubilee Medal provides an opportunity for us to look back and recognize those who made Sault Ste. Marie what it is today," said Provenzano.

"There are so many people in the community that benefit, or have benefited, from the hard work of these outstanding individuals. It's an honour for me as the Member of Parliament from Sault Ste. Marie to recognize and thank you for your efforts on behalf of our community."

Angie Woodcock, Branch Manager of the local Red Cross office, joined Carmen at the ceremony.

The Red Cross was responsible for 8 of the 28 medals presented.

"The Queen's Jubilee Medal draws a distinct parallel between Our Majesty the Queen and our distinguished volunteers in that it is a testament to an individual?s dedication and commitment to community," said Woodcock.

"It acknowledges the contributions, accomplishments and sacrifices made in the name of humanity. These individuals are true ambassadors to the organizations they serve and we honour and celebrate them," added Woodcock.

Recipients were presented with the medallion along with a certificate signed by Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada.
