************************* Wireless broadband to Gros Cap and Prince Township

'This is good news that we have been working towards a long time' - Martin

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - High-speed rural Internet continues its expansion in the district with news that service through Vianet has begun in the Sault Ste. Marie airport and Pointes des Chênes areas and will be followed shortly by the Gros Cap and Prince Township area.

“This is good news that we have been working on for a long time,” said Sault MP Tony Martin. “I congratulate Vianet on taking this entrepreneurial initiative and thank again ADnet working to promote broadband in the district.” Vianet is offering wireless point-to-multipoint broadband service in the Pointes des Chênes and Airport areas.

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) will use wireless technology to deliver broadband (high-speed Internet) to the subscribers' premises.

This wireless system is completely different from Wi-Fi or satellite systems.

Full details are available here.

Martin has championed rural broadband for years, working with community organizations in the district, as well as business, government and local advocates. “This will be a good economic lever for district and home businesses as well as for personal use.”

This high speed development is separate from the recent Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) decision on deferral accounts allowing Bell to move forward on broadband service using cellular-based new technology.

The CRTC has also approved using about $422 million of money in the funds to deploy broadband Internet service to 112 rural and remote communities by 2014.

As part of the decision, the CRTC also directed Bell Canada, Bell Aliant, Telus and MTS Allstream to rebate $310.8 million ofthe $770 million deferral account money for their urban home telephone customers.
