Activists from the environmental group Greenpeace have this morning boarded Algoma Central's self-unloader Algomarine on Lake Erie.

Greenpeace says it has painted a slogan on the ship's hull and some activists have locked themselves to the Algomarine's loading boom.

It says the Coast Guard has so far refused a request from Algoma Central to board the coal ship and remove the protesters.

The vessel was carrying 30,000 tonnes of coal to the Nanticoke Generating Station.

Greenpeace wants Nanticoke closed by 2012 and is trying to raise Ontario's "dirty" energy as an issue in the upcoming provincial election.

A Greenpeace statement and photographs have been posted on SooToday.com's Green page.
