All 12 businesses that rent luxury suites at GFL Memorial Gardens are hanging onto their agreements even though they aren't getting much use of their investments because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

"Proponents have had the option to terminate agreements during this time but have chosen not to as they see the value in the relationship with the city," says Brent Lamming, the city's director of community services.

The dozen suite-holders pay between $11,000 and $14,000 a year.

City Council previously decided to pro-rate payments for the 2020-21 season.

On Monday, councillors will be asked to apply any payments made in advance for the 2020-21 season to the 2021-22 season, extending the term for an additional year to compensate for the lost Ontario Hockey League season.

The 12 suite-holders are:

  • Algoma Industrial Ltd.
  • Barzan Dentistry
  • BDO Canada
  • Eazy Express
  • Floreani Dentistry
  • Hollywood Cambrian Mall
  • Lucidia Ltd.
  • Lukenda Holdings Inc.
  • McDougall Energy Inc.
  • Power Fuels and Lubricants
  • Sault Ste. Marie Duty-Free Store
  • Wishart Law Firm

Also on Monday, councillors will be asked to provide similar one-year contract extensions to GFL (naming rights sponsor - $75,000), Pepsi (beverage rights holder - $24,000) and Molson (beer pouring rights holder - $43,000).

"The financial impact resulting from this change amounts to $256,185," Lamming says in a report to Mayor Provenzano and councillors.

"However, the safe restart program has minimized the overall impact to the municipality," he adds.

Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed starting at 4:30 p.m.
