NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA FAMILY SERVICES FOUNDATION

*************************
Algoma Family Services (AFS) Foundation is inviting community organizations, businesses and individuals to show their support for those living with a mental illness on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

As part of our #MIAW2016 campaign, we ask that you wear green – the official colour of mental illness/health – on Oct. 5 to show your support for those experiencing mental health challenges as a result of living with a mental illness. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about mental illness in our community and eliminate the stigma that surrounds it.

Those looking to get involved have the option of raising pledges, in addition to wearing green.

Pledges raised from #MIAW2016, will help benefit the thousands of children and youth in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District that experience mental illness. Businesses and organizations are encouraged to get creative in their way of raising pledges.

There will be prizes awarded to the group that raises the most funds, as well as to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the campaign. Any individual who raises more than $20 will be entered in a draw to win a one night stay at the Delta Sault Ste. Marie plus two movie passes for Cineplex Entertainment.

Thousands of Canadians are living with a mental illness but many do not receive the adequate services they require.

This campaign was created to bring attention to the ongoing issues that have affected people’s abilities to talk about their mental illness and create awareness of the services that are available in our community for those who require help.

By showing your support, you will be making an important contribution to ending the stigma on mental illness.

Please upload photos of yourself and your team wearing green on Oct. 5 to your social media outlets using the hashtags #MIAW2016 and #AFSF or tag Algoma Family Services Foundation on Facebook so we can see your green.

For more information about the campaign or to get involved please contact Kayla Primm, Fundraising Coordinator at (705) 945-5050 ext. 2671 or [email protected].
