Sault Symphony Young Artists’ Competition

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Sault Symphony Association will be hosting its 11th Young Artists’ Competition on Saturday, May 5.

The competition will take place at St. Luke’s Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, at 160 Brock St. from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

Competitors must be aged 21 and under, living and/or studying in the Algoma District of Ontario and the Tri-County area of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. 

Students will be evaluated by three adjudicators: one local and two out-of-town music professionals/instructors. 

Ten local senior-level students have entered this year’s competition, making it one of the highest-attended events in the competition’s history. 

Vocal competitors are Maggie Anderson, Becky McCauley, Melanie Case, and Carrie Berkompas.

Violin students include Victoria Jones, Claryssa Webb, Benjamin Gulder, Matthew Wilkinson, and Hannah Nicoletta, who will also be competing on piano.

First prize is $500 cash, plus the opportunity to perform with the Sault Symphony Orchestra as a soloist at a future concert. 

he runner-up will receive $300, and two honourable mentions will each be awarded a $100 prize.

The competition is open to the public, with admission at the door by silver donation.
