Sault Ste. Marie City Police are currently at the end of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site on Lake Superior, where they have received an unconfirmed report that a vehicle may have entered the water.

The area has been secured by police and no members of the public or media are being allowed anywhere near the site.

As of 5 p.m., police were still at the scene.

Little information is being released about the situation, but it is known that police divers were called out.

A photograph taken from South St. Marys Island can be viewed by clicking here.

As the image shows, a significant amount of police activity is taking place there, with a command unit and several other vehicles on site.

We are advised that most of the activity is near a boat ramp on the north side of the canal.

Sootoday.com will be standing by this evening and will post any further information as soon as it's released by police.
