Austin McKay of the Prescription Centre yesterday accepted the 2003 Environment Award for companies with fewer than 50 employees, presented by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

The following material was supplied to SooToday.com by the Chamber:

******************* Environment Award

Sponsored by Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp.

This award honours two businesses that have shown exceptional environmental awareness in their day-to-day affairs or have contributed to the environment by way of a company-sponsored program for other members of the community.

One award is for a business with over 50 employees, and the other award is for a business with under 50 employees.

**************************************************************** Company Profile

The Prescription Centre, a community pharmacy since 1966 is located in the doctors building at 955 Queen Street E., and is locally and independently owned and operated by Austin MacKay.

A year and a half ago they introduced a healthy alternative for our environment.

They implemented a program to dispose of unused and expired prescriptions, medicines and over-the-counter drugs easily and safely.

Clients can come into their offices and drop off any unused or expired pharmaceuticals including sharps, needles and syringes and the Prescription Centre picks up the cost for disposal.

The experienced and trained staff looks after the disposal by taking the collection of waste to the Household Special Waste Depot in the Industrial Park who then sends these to Sudbury where they are incinerated.

The Prescription Centre cited they began this program to demonstrate a caring attitude towards the environment.

The Prescription Centre is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

The Prescription Centre dispenses medications, home health care supplies and a variety of health products.

The Prescription Centre's efforts are not only a healthy alternative that helps to protect our environment but it also demonstrates responsible, safe and healthy medicine management.

Congratulations The Prescription Centre!
