Soo Foundry & Machine Ltd. is the winner of the 2009 Safe Work, Sound Business Award, Sponsored by Sault Ste. Marie Safe Communities Partnership.

The Safe Work, Sound Business Award recognizes a business that uses a safe work management system, participates in workplace and /or community injury prevention programs and has exceptionally good injury frequency and injury severity performance.

************************ With a 40,000 square foot facility and employee base consisting of primarily skilled trades-persons including machinists, welders millwrights and hydraulics technicians, health and safety is a major focus at Soo Foundry & Machine Ltd.

The company operates a full service machine shop with conventional and CNC machines.

It also has a large welding shop and hydraulic repair facility.

The newest facility, completed in 2009, has extensive heavy manufacturing capabilities, with over 55 tons of lifting capacity under a 55 foot roof.

Five years ago, Soo Foundry joined the initial class of IAPA's Sault Ste. Marie, Safety Group, along with a number of local businesses and large mentor companies.

Soo Foundry under the guidance of IAPA developed a comprehensive health and safety program.

The Company has seen a continuous improvement in it's health and safety performance, and has gone over 12 months without a lost time incident.

In addition to in-house efforts, Soo Foundry and Machine, employees are required to do a significant amount of work off-site, requiring that employees maintain the same level of health and safety awareness not only in the shop, but also in the field.

In 2008 the company developed it's own Confined Space Rescue Team, with advanced First Aid. The company works closely with local health and safety partners and considers the partnerships both valuable and important.
