Bill Shepherd of Bruce Street Storage is the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award, sponsored by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

As a volunteer-based organization, the Chamber has many unsung heroes every year - people who dedicate their time to special projects, events or programs they believe will benefit the business community as a whole.

Initiated in 1985, the Volunteer of the Year Award was designed to recognize an individual whose time, commitment and contribution to the Chamber over the years, or during the past year, has been outstanding.

Here's what they said about Bill Shepherd at yesterday's award presentation:

************************ Congratulations to Bill Shepherd on being named the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer of the Year and thank you from the Board of Directors and the staff of the Chamber of Commerce for all of your efforts.

Bill has been a long-time volunteer with the Chamber, serving on its Board of Directors, on various Chamber committees including Government Relations, Home and Outdoor Show, Membership Development and Retention and the Chamber Office Premises task force.

Bill also served as President of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce in 2007 /2008.

Originally from the Sault, Bill is an engineer by education, and a natural business-person by experience.

He returned to Northern Ontario, making the Sault his home in 2001 after nearly 40 years in the United States where he owned and operated a number of businesses.

Upon his return, Bill began to develop Bruce Street Storage and immediately became involved with the Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber is powered by its membership and by the many volunteers that take the time to assist and guide the organization.

Thank you to Bill of taking on the challenge and congratulations on being named the Chamber's Volunteer of the Year.
