City Police are investigating what appears to be a body found this morning near the front steps of the Sault Ste. Marie Court House.

The discovery was made on the Elgin Street side of the building.

There's no initial indication from investigators whether foul play is suspected or the whether the death may have resulted from last night's frigid temperatures.

Environment Canada reports that the temperature at Sault Ste. Marie Airport dipped to a 24-hour low of -28.5 degrees Celcius at 7 a.m. today and never rose above -20.6 from midnight on.

The official record low temperature for this date in Sault Ste. Marie is -36.2, set in 1994.

At Chapleau Airport at 7 a.m. this morning, the temperature was within less than one degree of the all-time record for that community of -40, also set in 1994.
