The man who coached Lake Superior State University’s hockey Lakers to NCAA Division I titles in 1992 and 1994 could win another national crown tonight.

Jeff Jackson’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish play the Boston College Eagles in U.S. college hockey’s title game at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.

The Irish enter the game as decided underdogs.

Notre Dame reached the final by upsetting the powerful University of Michigan Wolverines 5-4 in an overtime thriller Thursday night.

Besides serving as head coach when LSSU won its second and third NCAA championships, Jackson was an assistant under Frank Anzalone when the Lakers first claimed NCAA laurels in 1988.

Jackson later coached the Guelph Storm in the OHL, worked as an NHL assistant coach with the New York Islanders and led the U.S. national junior program.

While Notre Dame hockey dates back to the 1960s, the legendary school is after its first NCAA hockey national championship.

Two Sault, Ontario products enjoyed considerable success as student-athletes on past Fighting Irish hockey teams.

Eddie Bumbacco was named a hockey All-American in 1973.

And Steve Noble was honoured as an Academic All-American 10 years ago.
