Hockey-playing leprechaun hangs his hat (24 photos)

Jesse Beaudin of M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island didn't get lucky yesterday at his team's first game in the Little Native Hockey League (Little NHL) tournament.

Not even with this cool hat and beard to bring it on.

So today Beaudin (shown) plans to hang up the hat and just play his hardest as the 37th tournament continues today in Sault Ste. Marie.

With 1,500 players, their supporters and coaches in town until Thursday, the hotels in the Ontario Sault are full, as well as some in the Michigan Soo, said organizing committee member Trevor Sayers.

Batchewana First Nation of Ojibways is hosting the tournament in the Sault this year and they're using all six rinks in five locations to do it.

At last night's opening ceremony, players from the 108 participating teams found out they'll be headed to Sarnia next year, where Aamjiwnaang First Nation will host the 38th annual Little NHL.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation, sometimes referred to as Chippewas of Sarnia First Nation, is located on the shore of the St. Clair River near Sarnia.

About 850 people live in the community and it's rumoured to be one of a very small number of communities with almost exactly two girls for every boy.

They also have an awesome midget girls' hockey team that, after last night's announcement, is fully expected to come back and win every game.

No pressure, girls.

The bearded Mr. Beaudin also said his team will come back and win today.

With pretty much everyone from M'Chigeeng in the Sault for this year's tournament, it's kind of important.

Beaudin said now that they know where they're going next year, they'll start getting ready for Little NHL 2009 as soon as this tournament is over.

"It's an Islander thing to do," he said. "We play hockey."

Beaudin may want to ditch the hat though.

Even if he did find a twoonie on the floor almost immediately after he put it on yesterday.
