The Sault Ste. Marie [Michigan] City Commission has voted to work with the Joint International Bridge Authority and Sault [Ontario] City Council in a bid to save the bridge bus.
Tonight's Sault Evening News reports that the action was taken after Commissioner William Munsell expressed concern that each full-time Ontario student who can't get to Lake Superior State University represents a $20,000 loss to LSSU over three years.
Munsell is also interested in whether the bridge authority has a legal obligation to continue to provide some way for pedestrians to cross the border.
On Monday night, Mayor John Rowswell asked Ward 6 Councillor Frank Manzo to investigate the bridge's history on the same issue.
Also reported in tonight's Evening News:
- despite the lack of snow, work is proceeding on the local snowmobile trails and tunnels, and the system is expected to be ready in time for the Sault Snowmobile Association's rally and I-500 Snowmobile Race.
- construction on the $16 million West Pier Project is expected to start in spring and will take about two years.
