Sault College welcomes its first WUSC international student

SAULT COLLEGE - The saying “it takes a village,” comes to life as the Sault College community prepares to welcome its first World University Service Canada (WUSC) student.

Yesterday evening, College students and staff were in attendance at the Sault Ste. Marie airport to officially welcome the South Sudanese student to Canada and to Sault College.

“The generosity our College community has shown is truly remarkable and we look forward to providing more opportunities to WUSC students in the future,” states Raymond Trecartin, a second year Peace and Conflict Studies student and lead on Sault College’s WUSC committee. “Opportunities for higher education are virtually non-existent for many talented young men and women who are often forced to flee their home country, only to face the harsh conditions of life in a refugee camp. We are excited to be working together to transform lives in this way.”

For the first time, Sault College has partnered with WUSC to bring a refugee to Sault Ste. Marie and Sault College to study this fall.

The College’s bookstore, residence and student financial assistance office have helped with the efforts by covering the costs of books, housing and tuition.

Students, staff, faculty and administrators all worked together to raise funds and awareness of the program that helps student refugees achieve their educational goals.

“This WUSC student is the first of a dozen international students that will be attending Sault College this fall,” states Krista Pearson, registrar, Sault College. “It’s an exciting accomplishment for our College to be an international destination to so many. We continue to create a culture that fosters the expansive exploration of ideas, and a safe and inspiring space to establish a progressive and inclusive environment for all students. Increasing international student enrolment and seeking out international student learning opportunities for Sault College students is a priority.”

There is a full range of College programs, including certificates, diplomas, enhanced diplomas, graduate certificates and apprenticeship programs that are available to international students.

Along with a variety of program areas, the College offers many services including prayer and reflection rooms that help to support diversity.

“As Sault College continues to grow, we are committed to supporting our diverse population, states Matt Trainor, director of student services, Sault College. “Prayer and relaxation rooms are located on the main campus and offer a quiet, safe space for staff and students of any faith to enjoy silent reflection or group devotion.”

Outstanding education with talented faculty, excellent programs and a premium student experience are just some of the many reasons why local, regional and increasingly national and international students are choosing Sault College as an educational destination of choice.

About Student Refugee Program

For most refugees, there are few or no opportunities to continue post-secondary education.

Since 1978, WUSC's Student Refugee Program (SRP) has helped address this shortage by enabling student refugees to pursue their studies at Canadian universities and colleges.

From countries of origin as diverse as Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Burma and Afghanistan, most have successfully completed their studies and are now active Canadian Citizens making valuable contributions to their communities.

Others have returned to their home countries and are contributing as nation builders or active community members.
