NEWS RELEASE

MIKE TAFFAREL, CANDIDATE

MARXIST-LENINIST PARTY OF CANADA

*********************** On behalf of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada, I, Mike Taffarel, am pleased to announce my candidacy in the upcoming federal election for the riding of Sault Ste. Marie.

As an Algoma steelworker and a worker politician, I call upon all Soo and area voters to:

- stand Up for Canada! - stand Up for Sault Ste. Marie! - stand up for Algoma Steel! and - vote Marxist-Leninist!

At this time, the U.S. asset management company of Paulson & Co., Inc. of New York is stepping up its nefarious attack on the independence and sovereignty of Canada, on the well-being and future prosperity of Sault Ste. Marie and on the very existence of a viable and secure major local employer Algoma Steel.

On December 1, Paulson & Co., Inc. filed a legal action in Toronto to fast-track its attempt to plunder ASI of its recently accumulated $400-plus million in retained earnings, replace a majority of Algoma's Board of Directors and even possibly its CEO, Denis Turcotte.

This is not merely a private, economic, business issue facing Algoma Steel and its board of directors, but a serious political issue that must be immediately addressed by all area politicians and voters alike.

The steel industry in Canada, one of the pillars of the national ecenomy, is being bombarded by both "friendly" and "hostile" takeover attempts by foreign interests.

Where are we as Canadians to stand on this issue?

There are also many other pressing issues facing us all at this time and I am looking forward to engaging in fruitful discussions with as many of my constituents as possible over the next few days and weeks of the current federal election campaign.

As well as myself, two other candidates of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada will be contesting Northern Ontario ridings:

- Dave Starbuck, a math teacher at Cambrian College will be running in the electoral district of Sudbury

- Steve Rutchinski, a university support staff worker will be running in the electoral district of Nickel Belt
