************************* Former DND employee charged with fraud

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (May 3, 2010) - The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS), the investigative arm of the Canadian Forces Military Police, charged a former Department of National Defence (DND) employee with one count of fraud.

Ms. Crystal Charlebois-Miller, who was the procurement officer for Area Support Unit Northern Ontario at the time, was charged with fraud contrary to section 380(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The charge resulted from an extensive joint investigation with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service into use of public funds over a few years.

"The Canadian Forces Military Police takes all complaints seriously, and allegations of theft and fraud are investigated with due diligence by the appropriate authorities, to determine the facts," said Lieutenant-Colonel Gilles Sansterre, commanding officer of the CFNIS. "In conjunction with the local Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, the CFNIS was able to ascertain the extent of the allegations and take appropriate action in laying of this charge against the accused."

The CFNIS is an independent Military Police unit with a mandate to investigate serious and sensitive matters in relation to National Defence property, DND employees, and CF personnel serving in Canada and abroad.
