Doug Ford, former Toronto city councillor, has been officially announced as the Ontario Progressive Conservative party’s new leader.

The announcement came late Saturday after party officials told party members, gathered at their leadership convention in Markham, Ontario, a recount of the leadership vote would be necessary.

Ford defeated former MPP Christine Elliott by a slim, 153-vote margin.

Other candidates included Caroline Mulroney and Tanya Granic Allen.

Results from the vote were expected by 3 p.m. Saturday, but that was pushed back to 5 p.m. before party officials stated a recount was being carried out after 7 p.m.

Sault MPP Ross Romano, who had thrown his support behind Christine Elliott, was not immediately available for comment.
