************************ A piece of Sault Ste. Marie's history

One of Sault Ste. Marie’s most treasured landmarks, the Memorial Gardens, is scheduled to be torn down in the coming months, and fans are being offered one last chance to purchase a piece of local history.

Sault Ste. Marie hockey fans and the sentimental alike will appreciate news that preparations are being made to sell the Memorial Gardens seats, offering an opportunity to permanently own a piece of the landmark.

The Memorial Gardens has long since been a fundamental part of the community, serving as the home of the Soo Greyhounds for over 57 years.

By supporting the development of the new arena, fans will have a keepsake of a place that has created many memorable moments for the community; with the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Ron Francis, Paul Coffey, John Vanbiesbrouck and Craig Hartsburg all donning the red and white jersey before moving on to impressive NHL careers, and the victory that remains one of the proudest moments in local history, as the Greyhounds defeated the Peterborough Petes to capture their first-ever Memorial Cup Championship in 1993.

Now, the community prepares to enter into a new era with a new arena, creating new memories while still embracing the rich history of the old Memorial Gardens.

The deconstruction of the Gardens will be a sad time for many, but with it comes the opportunity to support the new arena and embrace the future, all while claiming a piece of Sault Ste. Marie's history.

Application forms to purchase seats are available at upcoming Greyhound playoff games, the Gardens' administration office, and the community services department.

A pre-sale event will begin on March 27 and run until April 10, with the final deadline extending to April 30.

In addition to the seats, the arena's score clock is also up for sale.

Contact Trevor Zachary, at the Sports and Entertainment Centre, for more details.

Since it is expected that demand for seats will be high, requests for specific seats will, unfortunately, not be guaranteed.

Prices for seats are as followed (including applicable taxes):

• single seats - $30 • double seats - $45 • bench - $25 per 15 ft (other sizes available)

The public is being asked to pay for seats prior to pick-up dates, which may be provided at time of purchase.

Beginning today, payment with Visa/MasterCard, cash, cheque, or debit can be made in person at the Gardens' administration office.
