Art Gallery of Algoma will consider offering regular Chinese calligraphy and language classes this fall after a successful lettering workshop tonight.

Lan Gao took students through the rudiments of the Four Treasures of the Study: brush, inkstick, paper and ink stone.

Each student produced versions of the ideograph Fú (福) , one of the most common Chinese characters.

It's thought to confer good luck, especially when displayed upside down.

Trained in traditional Chinese dance, gymnastics and yoga, Gao came to Canada in 2004 and has lived in the Sault for the past eight years.

Tonight's event was part of the Art Gallery of Algoma's Summer Sunset Series.

Other upcoming events, all taught by Megumi Matsumoto, include:

  • Aug. 23. Fashion and creation. 6:30 p.m.
  • Aug. 30. Japanese tea ceremony. 6:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 6. Origami night. 7 p.m.

Cost is $7 regular admission, $5 for students and seniors. Free for Art Gallery of Algoma members.
