A stretch of rainfall that is expected to begin this weekend and last into next week could mean flooding in some areas.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority issued a flood watch statement this morning as the area watershed forecast indicates 65 mm to 85 mm of rainfall possible over the next five days, with the heaviest rain expected Saturday.

Local rivers, creeks and streams are currently flowing at normal levels, though the surface runoff due to heavy downpours can cause levels and flows to rise across the watershed. There may be localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are also flowing at normal levels.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the flood control channels and all waterways as flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery.

The current statement is in effect until May 1.
