Watershed Condition Status - FLOOD WARNING

Issued September 10, 2013, at 10:30 a.m.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a FLOOD WARNING to residents in regard to current river conditions.

Local small creeks and streams are flowing at higher than normal levels.

Most watercourses are flowing at the level of the banks due to last night’s rainfall events.

Some of the watercourses have exceeded their measured flood criteria.

Further rainfall this afternoon is forecast with possible precipitation amounts of 15 -25 mm for Sault Ste. Marie.

Currently, local ground conditions are saturated and any rainfall will result in the precipitation entering local streams and creeks and cause increased flows in water courses.

Flooding of local streams and rivers could occur based on current conditions.

The watercourses are currently fast flowing and water levels are extremely high.

There may be further localized flooding in areas with poor drainage and near waterways.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will be closely monitoring streamflows across the watershed.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to extend a warning to residents living near rivers and streams to be extremely cautious and be prepared to evacuate if water levels approach their property.

All residents and visitors are advised to stay away from all rivers, creeks and streams.

High water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery.

Please keep children and pets away from the fast flowing water.
