*************************** One weather related collision reported

GARDEN RIVER FIRST NATION - There was only one weather related motor vehicle collision reported during yesterday’s inclement weather.

At 6:25 p.m. two vehicles were travelling westbound on Highway 17 (four lanes) when one of the vehicles lost control on icy roads and struck the passenger side of a pick up truck.

There were no injuries and no charges.

OPP remind motorists to use caution when shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses, as these sections of road freeze much sooner in cold weather and stay frozen long after the sun has risen.

Watch out for frost, areas of the road that appear black and shiny, as they can cause your vehicle to suddenly lose traction.

Slow down, keep your foot off the brake, and be ready to shift to neutral or step on the clutch as your vehicle crosses these areas.

*************************** The Sault Ste Marie Police Service investigated four collisions yesterday that appear to be caused by drivers failing to adjust to winter road conditions.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to advise and remind motorists to please slow down and adjust your driving to the road conditions.

The following are some safe driving tips for this winter season:

With fresh snow fall, road conditions may be slippery, especially near intersections.

Leave more space between vehicles with.

Stopping distances are at least double on snowy roads, and even longer in icy conditions.

Leave earlier, to allow yourself a little extra time travelling to your destination.

Drive safely and be extra cautious in the school areas.

Check your headlights to make sure they are working.

Clean your windshield (inside and out).

Drivers should take time to clear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors and the roof of their vehicles and are asked to wait until the fog clears from the window before travelling.

Have your wiper blades checked and replaced, if necessary.

Fill your windshield washer fluid reservoir.

Have your battery checked.

Always keep your gas tank at least half full at this time of year.

Have winter tires installed.

Be ready for rapidly changing conditions.

Blowing snow may suddenly reduce visibility, and gusting winds can cause ice to form quickly.

Monitor road and weather conditions.

Check local media and road authority websites such as the Ministry of Transportation website (www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/conditions) for conditions and closures before you leave home or work and listen to local radio during your journey.

Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle (blanket, flashlight, candle, cell phone and some food or drinks).

Do not call 911 or the OPP for road reports.

Winter weather can create driving hazards.

Please be patient, drive with caution and care and have a safe winter season.
