Rules of the road for snowmobilers

WAWA - The Ontario Provincial Police Superior East Detachment would like to remind the public of the following motorized snowmobile laws pertaining to travel on the local roadways.

To drive a snowmobile on municipal roadways the driver must be 16 years of age and must possess a valid driver’s license or a motorized snowmobile permit.

Although youth may obtain the motorized snowmobile permit at the age of 12 years, they are not permitted on the roads until they are 16 years of age.

The second reminder pertains to the speed limit for motorized snowmobiles on the local roadways.

While the speed limit for motor vehicles is 50 km/hr, the limit is only 20 km/hr for snowmobiles.

There have been several complaints in regards to both issues over the past few weeks.

Superior East OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Dan Dawson says: “Snowmobile riding is a great way to enjoy the winter months. Being aware of and following the rules will ensure that your family will have a safe and happy ride.”
