Fire hazard remains high

Forest Fire Situation Update - Northeast Region

July 7, 2012 (15:30)

Two new fires have been confirmed thus far today in the Northeast Region.

Bancroft 16 is Under Control at 0.1 hectares in size, while Wawa 22 is 0.2 hectares and listed as Not Under Control.

Yesterday brought 7 new confirmed fires throughout the Northeast Region.

Fires were confirmed in the areas of North Bay, Algonquin Park, Parry Sound, Chapleau and Sudbury.

The following is an overview of these fires.

  • North Bay 45 was a 0.1 hectare fire on Caribou Lake, east of Temagami. The fire is now Out. 
     
  • Algonquin Park 7, a 0.5 hectare fire is currently Being Held. The fire, near Hay Lake was responded to by Helitak. No problems are anticipated. 
     
  • Parry Sound 19 was a fire Northwest of Stanhope. The fire is currently 0.2 hectares in size and Under Control.
     
  • Parry Sound 20 east of Huntsville near the Oxtongue River is 0.3 hectares in size. Helitak and Twin Otters were dispatched to this fire that is now Being Held.
     
  • Parry Sound 21 is a 0.2 hectare fire near Raven Lake. This fire was also actioned by the Twin Otters, and is now Out.
     
  • Chapleau 27, south of Biscotasing is a 1 hectare fire. The fire was responded to by air attack and ground crews yesterday and suppression efforts continue on the fire today as it is currently Being Held.
     
  • Sudbury 63 was a 0.1 hectare fire in French River Provincial Park. The fire is now Out.

As the hazard is high across the region, the public is reminded to take extreme care and caution in all outdoor activities. 

Make sure you have adequate resources when considering the use of a campfire, and ensure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving.

Many municipalities in the region have imposed fire bans.

It is important to check with your local municipality before burning to ensure there are no fire bans in place.

There are currently 20 fires in the Northeast Region, burning 48115 hectares.

To date, there have been 347 fires in the Northeast Region, having burnt 49667.9 hectares.
