Fire and smoke in the woodpile (4 photos)

Sault Fire Services rush to smouldering hog fuel pile on Yates Avenue

Four Sault Fire Services trucks and a command vehicle were at And-Son Contracting, a Yates Avenue industrial site, late Wednesday morning.

A fire started in large heaps of hog fuel, which consists of wood shavings used to fire up industrial boilers, such as those at Essar Steel Algoma.

Fire crews extinguished the flames and stood at the ready, then a payloader cleared the area of smoky wood chips.

“We’re not sure of the cause. Normally these piles let off steam and moisture all the time, but someone noticed there was smoke instead of steam, so that’s when we got called,” said Damon Ferris, Sault Fire Services platoon chief.

The fire was at the back of the pile and not considered severe, Ferris told SooToday.

There were no injuries or damage to nearby buildings, Ferris said.
