Fatal highway collision near Blind River (photo added)

On May 29, 2014 at 4:40 p.m. officer from the East Algoma detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call of a collision involving a car and a tractor trailer 20 kilometres east of Blind River in Spragge. 

Upon arrival police learned a westbound car crossed into the path of an eastbound tractor trailer. 

The collision caused the two vehicles to catch fire and skid eastbound coming to rest in the ditch. 

Township of the Northshore Fire Department attended the scene to extinguish the fire and both vehicles were destroyed as a result.

The driver of the tractor trailer escaped uninjured and the driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The collision resulted in Highway 17 being closed overnight to large vehicles with a detour set up for smaller vehicles.

The identity of the deceased is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The collision is still under investigation by officers from the East Algoma OPP detachment with the assistance of a Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) from the OPP.
