United Steelworkers Locals 2251 and 2724 have been asked by Essar Steel Algoma Inc. to participate in cost-containment discussions that include re-opening collective agreements that otherwise wouldn't expire until the summer of next year, the Sault Star is reporting this morning.

The newsaper says leadership of both locals are opposed to further concessions.

Local 2724, representing Essar supervisors and technical staff, has previously agreed to a four-day work week with significant pay cuts.

Essar's Brenda Stenta has told the Star that the company is open to any ideas for controlling costs.
