Essar Steel Algoma has announced temporary layoffs of 130 employees effective January 11, with more layoffs expected to follow.

All of the laid-off workers are members of United Steelworkers Local 2251.

Workers learned of the plans late yesterday from Armando Plastino, Essar's chief operating officer.

The company is arranging for counselling workshops and Service Canada personnel will be at Essar next week to assist the laid-off workers.

Today, Local 2251 members are voting on whether to enter into talks regarding the company’s proposed work-sharing plan.

One voting session was held this morning.

A second is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Great Northern Resort & Conference Centre (formerly the Best Western) on Great Northern Road.
