Esquire Club to cheer on local hockey product with ‘Matier Beer’

Ottawa 67’s defenseman and Sault native Jack Matier will be featured on the Esquire Club’s promotional beer during this year’s World Juniors after the 19-year-old was selected to Team Canada this week

It has a nice ring to it.

The Esquire Club is celebrating the Sault’s very own Jack Matier with ‘Matier Beer’ after it was announced earlier this week that he made Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax, N.S.

While Canada plays throughout the tournament, the Esquire Club will have beer available for purchase that features a specially-made decal of Matier, which was designed by Shane Mifflin from Superior 7.

Esquire Club spokesperson Matt Patreau is thrilled with the look of the design, and he’s excited for the Matier family as they gear up for the World Juniors.

“They’ve been family friends for a number of years,” he says. “We just wanted to do something special for Jack and help get the exposure out there.”

“It’s always amazing to see how people here come together for the World Juniors,” he adds.

Patreau says more details on the Matier Beer promotion will be released in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Jack Matier’s dad Mark was in the grocery store on Monday when his son texted him that he made the team.

Five days later, the news is still surreal for the proud father.

“It’s unreal,” he says. “Jack has worked so hard for this, and he’s so deserving of it. We’re really looking forward to getting down to Halifax.”

“The Esquire’s support has been overwhelming,” he adds. “Hearing from friends that I haven’t heard from in years – it’s just been really nice to see.”

Proudly sipping his son’s beer while speaking with SooToday, Matier says it doesn’t get much better than this.

“I love two things in life: beer and hockey,” he laughed. “This is the ultimate Canadian combo.”

“The Esquire has done so much for the Matier family over the years and throughout the community,” he adds. “It’s great to see the community getting behind Jack and the Canadian team.”

Jack Matier is in St. Stephen, N.B., this weekend, getting in some practice and team bonding activities before he and the rest of Team Canada head to Halifax on Sunday.

The Matiers will be travelling out east Dec. 23 to cheer on their family’s young star – something they didn’t think would happen just months ago.

“We just took the kids to Halifax this summer,” Mark Matier says. “We had a blast, and I remember jokingly saying we’ll get back here one day – and then, sure enough, he made the team. We’re even staying in the same hotel as last time. It’s unreal how it worked out.”

“They’re going to have a really good team this year,” he adds.

Team Canada opens the tournament on Dec. 26 in Halifax against Czechia.
