Joey Calzone's will close sometime in late October, to make room for Station Mall's new SportChek store.

But, the wildly popular Italian eatery will reopen around the middle of November in the former Ubetcha Tap & Grill location on the mall's opposite side.

Under a new name.

And a whole new concept.

But still Italian.

Italian with a twist.

Owners Joe Iachetta and James Michaud (shown) tell SooToday.com that the new name will be Joey's Twisted Italian Grill & Pub.

The new place will serve what Iachetta and Michaud call "twisted originals" of traditional Joey Calzone's offerings, including deep-fried lasagna (held by Iachetta, left) and wood-fired pizza (held by Michaud, right).

In a major departure, the new Joey's will no longer have those big barrels of shelled peanuts. The "twist" will be FieryNuts, the new five-alarm local snack made by the Sault's Gino Posteraro.

Under a deal that's been almost two years in the making, SportChek will move into the Bay Street side of Station Mall, occupying a swath of retail space stretching from the former Bennardo Jewellers Ltd. location through to the midpoint of the existing Joey Calzone's.

Iachetta says he'll miss the Bay Street traffic, particularly the spillover crowds from the Essar Centre, but on most nights, Joey Calzone's did more business with Galaxy Theatre, which will now be considerably closer.

Joey's Twisted Italian Grill & Pub won't use all of the former Ubetcha space and the new Joey's will be somewhat smaller than the existing location.

The food will be a fusion of grill pub fare and Italian, with added international flavours, all served from an open kitchen.

"It's the Joey’s you know with a twist," says Iachetta.

Michaud's fresh hot bread (he started baking at age 16 for the legendary Bluebird Bakery) has always been a big part of Joey Calzone's appeal.

The Joey's Twisted menu will include a "more grown-up" and "more European" selection of Michaud's baked offerings.

The Ubetcha seating and dining-room configuration will be redesigned with more pub tables, booths and low tables.

Construction in the new location has already begun.

A job fair for the new Joey's Twisted Italian Grill & Pub will be held at Station Mall in early November.
