Statement by Michael Mantha, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin on Elliott Lake inquiry announcement

“I join the residents of Elliott Lake in hope that the independent inquiry will ask the tough questions about the collapse so we can ensure that nobody has to go through what our community experienced.

I trust that the Honourable Justice Paul R. Bélanger will be complete in his examination of the events that led to the collapse, and that he will examine the chain of events in the response and who had responsibility for the accident, what steps could have been taken to prevent the collapse, and most importantly what we can do to prevent another tragedy like this.

The next step in this process is for the government to formally establish the inquiry.

It's now incumbent on the government to establish terms of reference that will allow Justice Bélanger to conduct this inquiry with full freedom and independence, and with a broad enough scope to examine the difficult issues before him.

“There are lessons to be learned from the collapse of the Algo Centre Mall.

We owe it to Doloris Perizzolo and Lucie Aylwin, who were our neighbours and our friends, to ensure that Justice Bélanger's inquiry has the scope to ask and answer all the hard questions.”
